On these pages we are going to have a little fun exploring some of the groups of people for whom the schools have been named. For over 100 years CPS schools have been named for prominent individuals on the local, state, national and international stage. With over 1200 schools in CPS' history, the list of namesakes reads like a who's who of politicians, artists, explorers, educators and humanitarians.

We begin with the Mayors of Chicago. Ten CPS schools have been named for mayors of Chicago. Below, we list the mayors and then an interesting fact that applies to only one of them. See if you can match all ten mayors with all ten facts. The answer key is below.

A. As a child he worked as a teamster on the Erie Canal.

D. Standing 6’6” and weighing 300 lbs, he was Chicago's biggest mayor.

E. He ran unopposed in 3 elections.

F. He owned a Michigan copper mine.

G. This mayor delivered Chicago’s shortest inaugural speech.

H. His European vacation was so long that the common council appointed an alderman to replace him as mayor.

I. He received only 489 votes, enough to beat his opponent, John Kinzie, who received 217 votes.

J. His projects including straightening the South Branch of the Chicago River and establishing Chicago’s first airport.
