History is not that appealing when you are young and a student in High School unless you had Mr. McCarthy as your teacher. Every day was exciting and he made learning fun. He had a way about him that held your interest. He made History interesting and you wanted to learn more. After High School I never saw Mr. McCarthy again. Some 48 years later I am a part of the Shawl Ministry at my Parish in Des Plaines and I met many wonderful women knitting and crocheting shawls for people who need comfort of a shawl whether they had lost a loved one, sick or homebound, the birth of a new baby, etc. One of these women mentioned Schurz high school and I asked if she had gone there and she said, "No, but my husband was a teacher there for many years". I asked what her husband's name was and lo and behold it was Justin A. McCarthy! The following meeting that we met I brought my Schurzone and I showed her Justin's photo with his signature underneath. We both cried at the thought that he taught me so many years ago.

I had U.S. History with Mr.
I had U.S. History with Mr. McCarthy as a sophomore (1965-66) and enjoyed his style of teaching; he held the attention of those who loved the subject and wanted to learn. That was a good thing for me because I went through that year without having a textbook. Due to an administrative mix-up I wasn't assigned to his class until about a month into the school year and didn't get a book and so had none to turn in at the end of the semester. At year's end I had no book to turn in and Mr. McCarthy was surprised,to say the least, that somebody could pass the course without benefit of a text.
