Mr. Raymond McCants knew each of his students and always called you "Miss" or "Mister". His science classes were always engaging with hands-on projects. Just reading notes on the board were entertaining with the varied colored chalks. When I began teaching in 1973 I tried to use the same technique, but it just didn't work for me. Mr. McCants remembered his students and that last time I saw him was in a Jewel's grocery store. When I walked up to him to speak to him, he said, "Miss Wharton it's good to see you"...I almost passed out! I'd not seen him since 1967, but he remembered me! Amazing, he taught 150+ students a year and he remembered me?
Ms. Frances Morrow was my division teacher. An outstanding teacher, she was also a great friend and mentor and the style maven of the school!
Ms. Greenwood...outstanding physical education teacher with a love for all of her students. I'd listened to my cousin talk about Ms. Greenwood and couldn't wait to be in her class.
Mr. McCants was our ligthning rod for education. We teased him once by wearing those "chest protector ties" he wore. They were tied in a windsor knot with a broad short extension down from his neck. Many of his male students joined in the MeCants parade that day. Mr. McCants merely said "I see that my style of dress is catching on." He was an intelligent teacher who told us about his experiences in the army in France where he was adored by the French women. He ws not one for modesty. Thank GOD for McCants, a superb interesting, educator. GOD BLESS.
