Canty 10_2_52.JPG: As far as I can tell, only five kids from the 1952 second grade made it to the graduation photo. We had a celebrity in the class at that time: George Gobel's son, Greg was the kid seated in the first row, second from the left.
Canty 10_54.jpg: By 1954, we had about 21 kids that would make it to the graduation picture.
Canty 10_55.JPG: Here's our class in 1955 with some of the older kids that would graduate in February 1959.

I think you are mistaken.
I think you are mistaken. There are more than 5 kids that made it to the graduating class. I don't know when you graduated in 1959, but the class photo you are showing with Greg Gobel in the photo is for the January, 1959 graduating class. I know that more kids made it because not only did we finish Canty together, we finished Steinmentz High together. I believe that our class was the last of the January graduations from grammar school and high school. I have these photos and when I get a chance will look at them and if you want I can give you a name for the students in each row, or at least the majority of them. If you notice, the bottom photo is a combination of the January and June class (5B and 5A) 5A was the second half of 5th Grade, the January Class. Since I cannot read the grade on the top photo, unless it was a combined class photo, it is only of the January, 1959 graduating class. I will check it out and get back to you.
The top photo is of
The top photo is of the second grade morning class which was the January, 1959 graduating class. The second and third photos are of the June, 1959 graduating class. I have a copy of the photo for the January, 1959 graduating class and in the 1955 photo it shows grade 6B and 5A Oct 1955 208. They took photos of the class once a year and the reason the January,1959 class had 2 grades was because we went from 5A into 6B, within the class school year. Then, in September, when we returned to school we were in 6A (September through January) and 7B (February through June). In 1957, the photos show just one grade. The January, 1959 class photo in Oct 1958 shows Grade 8A which means we graduated in January, 1959. Another photo was taken of the January, 1959 graduates with their ribbons on. They were the same students that were in the Grade 8A photo.
Your 1955 photo does not include the kids that graduated in January, 1959. The kids in your 1955 photo is of the graduating class for June of 1959. If there are any kids from the top photo in your graduation photo, it may be they were kept behind and graduated in June instead of January. Kids were held back in those days if their grades were not good.
Hi Joyce! Sorry for the
Hi Joyce! Sorry for the mistake. It appears that the class picture was a combined grade photo. I graduated in June 1959 so you were in the class ahead of us. It's interesting that the 1952 photo says "Room 108, Grade 2 A.M." If I remember correctly, thats when there were too many kids enrolled and they did split shifts.
Canty's January '63 and
Canty's January '63 and Steinmetz' 67 were the ;ast January class. We graduated the week of the famous 67 blizzard

My brother and I attended
My brother and I attended kindergarten 1947-48 and 1948-49 (he also completed 1st grade) at a Canty Branch mobile location at 8220 Robinson Drive in unincorporated Norwood Township. The school was part of a temporary veterans housing project located between Montrose, Cumberland, Thatcher, and Berteau. Although it was outside the Chicago city limits, we had Chicago addresses. The only streets we can remember were Pittsburg (on which we lived) and Hutchinson nearby. Others who lived in the area were: John, Toni, Tina, and Mike Riley; Jerry and Nettie Dicholtz; Ken and Maryanne Schechtel; Ron, Bob and Mickey Fortin; Virginia Parnetke; Richard and Junellen Lacey; Tom McClure; Robert Beuhl; Dennis Steffke; Carl Wright; James Koehler. We have started a facebook group page called Thatcher Homes in Norwood Township, IL, for those who might like to post pictures or renew contacts. In addition to the temporary mobile school location on Robinson Drive, I vaguely remember visiting another white, mobile building on Irving Park near Plainfield. Anyone have any ideas on what that building might have been? Anyone having knowledge of the street names or people who lived there are invited to visit the facebook site and comment.
P S Did I know Eileen
P S Did I know Eileen Mulkerin and her brother John?
Eileen Mulkerin only had a
Eileen Mulkerin only had a sister, me (Glenda). She was born in 1944 and before 1948 she did live up on Pontiac and Irving Park. In a cottage behind the Sunnich (sp?) house. Then they moved to Pittsburgh and Belmont. My dad, Edward Mulkerin lived in they neighborhood since about 1920. He went to a small one room school house which became the tiny grocery on Pontiac and Grace. It was called Irvingwood School. I have a picture of the entire school and will copy it and post to this site.
