WONDERFUL DAYS AT WILLARD AND BIRNEY

I went to Willard Elementary School from 1945 (K to 8). I graduated from Willard January 1953. I was Audrey Abrams then. I taught at Birney School from 1962 to 1968 (Mrs. Audrey Thornton then).

Wonderful Days at Willard. Some of my teachers were Ms. Fagenburg, Mrs. Dorem (I hope I'm spelling correctly). Mrs. Lewis was the principal then. There also was Mrs. Polk, Mrs. Mahone, Ms. Steward, and others whose name I don't remember.

Some of my classmates were: Glenda (Canady) Evans, Lawrence Head, Barbara Windom, Joyce Young, Joy Abney, Melvin Patterson, Major Armstead, Victor Stepleton, Arbria Nelson, and others I'll think of later.

Some of my great memories from Willard is going to the Assembly Hall (in Kindergarten you had to cross your legs in the seats) and seeing movies, going to the lunch room and getting chocolate milk, jumping double dutch rope over the girds in the playground because they made a great sound. When we were practicing for graduation we started singing "Work With Me Annie". It sounded so good. There are more stories. I'll write again.

My teaching career at Birney was short. I moved to Colorado in 1968. I also would love to hear from some of those teachers, especially Ms. Foster and Mrs. Aguilar. So many memories. Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire was one of my students. I was invited back stage at one of their concerts in Denver,CO. I would love to hear from any of my students.

I have retired to a small town in Western North Caroline called Sylva. I'm so glad I found this site.
