05/01/08 What a neat site!
05/01/08 What a neat site! Hope to learn what's been going on all these many years! Miss Wixted and Miss Henninger died many years ago. I want to say the late 70's or early 80's. I had corresponeded with Rose Henninger for a few years while in college, I think. The years all seem to blend together now! I still correspond with Roberta Karlson every year at Christmas. She lives in Oak Lawn, still in her own home. Her husband Eugene died a few years ago. I remember one weekend in March going away for a sleepover at a girl scout camp. Came home only to find out that Holmes School was burned down because of an angry student. We received a lot of the students at Libby. All the empty classrooms on the third floor were put into use. The auditorium on the third floor was converted into a "gym". If you sat in Mr. Gordon's classroom on the second floor, you could hear the kids running around upstairs. Remember playing "kickball" and dodgeball out in the boys' playground in the gravel? What about Halloween -- costumes and the parade around the school and the boys playground with parents lining along the fence to see the costumes....and Affy Tapples.... The 8th grade girls, in white blouses, dark skirts and red bow ties, lined up on the two sets of stairs to the office, singing O Holy Night as the rest of the school left for Christmas vacation? Mrs. Slattery, third grade, who taught everyone cursive writing? The first time we were allowed to use a ball point pen in class? It was always pencils up to that time! Learning to tie gym shoes in kingergarten.....the rabbit comes up out of his hole, goes around the tree and back down into his hole..... The old brain is just starting to crank out memories. Hope more of you can post yours as well.
WOW, I can't believe Mrs.
WOW, I can't believe Mrs. Karlson is still alive. She was my 1st grade teacher. I thought she was a real hottie(LOL). I do remember the influx of students after the Holmes fire. Who could forget our auditorium/gym? I won Miss Henninger over on Halloween . I dressed up like a girl. Makeup, dress, even highheels. She took me around to at least 3 different classes that day. From that day on I was her pet. Do you remember getting milk in the morning? I use to be one of the volunteers that delivered it to all the class rooms. By the way, Oh Holy Night was not only for the girls. We had a few guys inthe choir. I know because I was one of them. With Miss Henninger at the piano , our 8th grade graduation (66/67)class sang a version of " We are 16 going on 17", which I believe was from the movie ,The Sound of Music. The lyrics were changed around to incorporate Arthur A. Libby into the song. The last last line of the song was "Arthur A. Libby in this great city, we are indebted to you." Be sure to check out the Alumni feature. When you click on it , you can look up your graduating class. It list everybody who graduated with you and their birthday. I was shocked at all the names I remembered. I wish everyone of them knew of this site.

I remember Libby school very
I remember Libby school very well and my teacher, Mrs. Brown. She was so much fun! I loved the paints, the puppet shows,,the 'what if' science projects and I was only in the first grade! It is teachers like her that hellped me do so well in school later on. Does anyone have any building pictures to post? It seems I remember stained glass windows. I have often wanted to see the building again.
Ms. Green, my teacher in
Ms. Green, my teacher in high school is one of my unforgettable teacher. Though she's still young, she taught us not only the lessons at school but also the lessons in life. Our class is very grateful for having her as our adviser because she is also one of the most respected teacher at school. So sad that God has given her only few years to live.
I just found this site and
I just found this site and sit here with a tear in my eye- I have thought about Libby for a while and thought about contacting the Principal and ask if I could come visit the school and walk the halls one more time. I remeber Mrs. Herbst, Mrs Wixted, Mrs. Connelly, and Mrs Steiner. I remember Mr. McNamara. I remember Ms. Handy, Mrs. Hamilton- I started Kindergarten and graduated 8th grade in 1971. I also remember Mrs. Fassel (spelled wrong I am sure). I went on to Gage Park High school. Has anyone been back to Libby? Please send me a note if you have. Thanks for posting teachers names and for the memories. My sister and I were both patrol students with the orange belt that went across the front and over the shoulder. GREAT SITE
I was class of 1969, and
I was class of 1969, and while I haven't been back, I did find that you can do a "virtual" walk around the block by going to: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=5300+S.+Loomis,+chicago+il&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&oe=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=5300+S+Loomis+Blvd,+Chicago,+IL+60609&gl=us&ei=895XTZ3vHMSqlAf2i4WVBw&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CBcQ8gEwAA
If the link doesn't work, just go to google and type in 5300 S. Loomis, Chicago IL and then click on the link for the address. The street view allows you to walk around the neighborhood.
Thanks, I have done that
Thanks, I have done that already- I was wondering how the school looked on the inside- My sister was class of 69 also. We talk about the days at Libby alot. Thanks again.
Oh my gosh my brother just
Oh my gosh my brother just alerted me to this site, i have long wondered about Libby School, I am from the class of 1969 and I have so many warm memories. My favorite teacher was Mr. Garrett, he was my reading teacher and I have always wanted to write him and tell him what a powerful impact he had on my life, today i am a librarian with a Masters Degree, all because he instilled a love of reading in me. If anyone knows about Mr. Garettet and contact info please email me.
I still have my safety patrom pin and green & white ribbons from graduation they gave you tow sets, one you had all your friends sign and the other you wore on graduation day. I have both, I also have the ribbons i won on day we would all compete in the 50 yard dash, running broad jump, standing broad jump and 16 inch softball throw, with Mr. McNamera as my gym teacher. I also remember being in the talent show, my friends and I dressed alike and di "Stop in the name of Love" by the Supremes. Good times
I love reading all the fond
I love reading all the fond memories of Libby. I am the librarian there now, and I can assure you it is still a wonderful school. We have a no-nonsense principal who sets expectations for kids and they rise to the occasion. Teachers are hard working and enthusiastic. This iis my fourth year and I love it.
So, if anyone would like to visit, I would be happy to facilitate it. In fact, I am teaching a small class in which the students explore their family and community histories. We would love to have Libby alumni visit and share their stories. We meet from 9-10 M, W, F. Please, come! Kathy Parker kcparker@cps.edu
How wonderful of you my
How wonderful of you my brother Steve will be contacting you soon so we can set up a visit so he and myself can come for a visit. I will especially love seeing the library of course. Thank you for responding and being willing to facilliatate this for us.

Hi Donna, I went to school
Hi Donna,
I went to school with your sister, I think? My sisters are the Davis clan. I was best friend of Bill Smith in early 60's, I then moved to Wisc. Earl Neumann, Jim Finn, Delray White, Larry Travis were friends of mine, along with Heinz, Al Parralas(?) lived next door to me on 57th Ada. I always wondered whatever happened to Sherry Scholtes? (She had a sister Julie and bro Bill.) My sisters Cookie, Rosanne and Patty and mom passed away.
I remember Mr Edwards, 8th
I remember Mr Edwards, 8th grade, he was great. But, to tell you the truth was his name Garret and first name Edward? I remember Mr. McNamera. I set alot of school records my sisters told me I still held 5 years later. I remember the Duddleston bros,Knight bros, Ken McIntier(?), Don Webb, Sharon Fuchs, Paula Skrobut and bro Tim, Lynn Gorgal, Ken & Tom Daniels, Tom Kohn, Linda Washik, Linda Harsted, Randy Bejack (?) along with some others whose names I have forgotten, but not their looks.
Mr. McNamera would be proud. I was kicked out of Lindblom H.S.. I moved to Wisc . and attended H.S. at Mosinee, WI. I graduated. I had baseball scouts from pro and college come to look at me, but Uncle Sam drafted me first. I didn't want to be drafted, so I enlisted and volunteered for duty in Nam.
After service, I attended the Univ. of Wisc and graduated with two majors and a minor, with a degree in Education. I, also, made the Honor Society. YEP! Hard to believe the kid Mrs Russell couldn't stand actually became a teacher. I, also, coached baseball (2 undefeated seasons in 2 years), then went into soccer. I will be given an award at the Wisc Hall of Fame, this April.
I was married and have 3 kids-2 girls - 1 boy. Yes, I am a grandpa. Where has the time gone?
Does anyone know whether Mr. Sharp, Mr. McNamera (last time I saw him was in 1973), Mr. Edwards (Garrett?) and Mrs Russell alive?
If anyone wants to contact me about something, please do, I won't bite. And, no, I don't owe anyone any money, so don't ask! (: Thanks!
Later-
Randy

Hello, My name is Randy
Hello,
My name is Randy Davis, class of 1963. I am writing this message to see if there would be any interest from fellow classmates for a reunion?
If you didn't graduate in this year, but know someone who has, could you please pass on this message?
If not interested, would you care to just add to this site? I had read the Sloan Foundation has given enough money for this site for a couple years. I don't know if, and how long, this site will be available to us. So time may be against us.
Would enjoy reading messages from you. Thanks.
Randy
