In looking back, I didnt realize at the time what my eighth grade teacher was trying to do for me. The teacher that Im speaking of is Mr. Basil Lambrakis.Since, fortunately ,at that time, our school didnt have big time security guards patroling the halls like today, Mr. Lambrakis was the one that the female teachers called on whan a student kinda thought they were tough. But thats not my story...My story is my understanding why he seemingly went out of his way to strongly encourage me to go to Lane Tech. At that time, Understand that there were no Whitney Young, or any other of todays specialty, "brainy' schools...Lane was where you went IF you qualified. I qualified. But I also, like most 13 year olds, wanted to go to the school that my buddies went to....Anyway, I ended up choosing Lane, mainly because I didnt want to dis appoint Lambrakis...Mr. Lambrakis not only wanted me to take advantage of the educational opportunity that he knew I'd gain, but also learn how to work with a body of students that more closely resembled my REAL world competition that I would have to learn to deal with ,if I was to be succesful.(Im African-American)...At the time ,Lane was predominantly caucasion...Blacks were about 9%...Anyway, I appreciate his encouragement..It helped me later on ,though I didnt graduate Lane because of economics, I did pretty well in the Marines, and also a 30 year career in the building trades, becoming a regular foreman...Thanks Mr. Lambrakis..(I still get a chuckle out of your first name)!!!..P.s...I just remembered...He also set me up with a football scolarship at Latin school(even though I hadnt played ball in eighth grade!!( they werent a fooball power, but an academic power)..I turned it down because I didnt want to wear a tie to school everyday..(how stupid! wish my parents would have said something, but they didnt know)...Anyway, hope theres someone out there who remember Mr. Lambrakis, and i truly hope hes doing well!!

I remember Mr. Lambrakis. I was in 5th grade, but went up to his 7th grade class for reading. Mr. Defino was the gym teacher when I was at Ryerson.
Does anyone remember Mr. Barshop? After we moved out of the neighborhood, I went to Gray Elementary. Who came around my 8th grade year to teach Social Studies? - Mr. Barshop. He stayed there many years before he retired. I remember being in his room (210) at Ryerson when the jet planes broke the sound barrier and created the "sonic boom". We jumped out of our seats every afternoon when the plane went by because we never knew when it would pass.
I also remember Miss Mocchi Room 209 (Mrs. Mittel when she got married)
And, who could forget our principal; Miss Lynch! (Real name) I can still remember the clicking of her chunk heels as she walked down the halls. They inspired terror from everyone.
Also, remember the marrionette shows that a couple used to put on in the auditorium? We had to pay 10 cents if we wanted to see it.
The last thing was getting candy and gum from Teddio's, the store on Monticello and Ohio. Those were the days!
