Karon Lester's Surprise Retirement Party in Japan

To whom it may concern, I am Karon Lester's Mother, and I was trying to get information about one of your former students.  She graduated in 1988 and has just retired from the Navy after 21 years. I just returned from the surprise retirement party in her honor, in Japan.  She graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar in 1988 and joined the Navy that
same year.  I am so proud of her and she also made Senior Chief.  I thought maybe if you could show the other students the pictures I am emailing it could be an incentive of if she can do it they can do it. She's married and has 2 young children.  Her name is Karon Matthews.

Memories

I attended Dunbar (also known as The Bar) from 1995 until 1999. It actually seemed much longer because I was one of the Mayo Elementary School students that attended Dunbar's band camp every summer (under the direction of Mr. Moore) from 1992-1995. I was the Drum Major Sarena "Silky Smooth" McIntosh of the Mighty Marching Music Machine during my freshman & sophomore years under the direction of Mr. Carl Cogar and a few others. In the latter days of high school, I ventured out to participate in other extra curricular activities, including bowling & golf. Many people knew me as the morning news anchorwoman because I was the face of WDV-TV and a very active student in the Television Productions shop class.

Dunbar was and still is a great secondary school and offers its students many opportunities that other schools do not. I had a wonderful experience at Dunbar and I look forward to planning and attending my 10-year high school reunion next year. The class of 1999 was the last graduating class of the 20th century, but the first to bring home an Oscar! Congratulations to Jennifer Hudson on all her hard work and much deserved success! We didn't vote her "Most Talented" just for the fun of it! She's not the only superstar from the Class of '99, there are many more to soon be recognized!

Graduated with Bernard Shaw

I attended Dunbar Vocational High School from 1955 to 1959.  I attended the building at 44th & St. lawrence for two years and the new Dunbar at 3000 South King Drive for two years.  I was in the graduating class with Bernard Shaw and he was the class president.  I attended 4 years of elementary school at Forestville and 4 years at Fuller.  I think this site is informative and is well overdue and it brings back a lot of memories. - EMG

Dunbar 1966

I graduated from Dunbar in June 1966. It was a great school. my greatest roll models was Mrs. Smith my P.E. teacher. Mrs. Jackson the millenary teacher and Mrs. walker my Home Mech teacher.
