Newberry Academy celebrated its 150th year anniversary this school year, and while we haven’t yet found photos of the school from as early as the founding in 1858, we do have a group photo of the principal and staff in 1892 (photo 1), Class of 2017 Kindergardeners at the school birthday party this year (photos 8 and 9) and many great school moments in between!

Original Newberry School building and extension to right. Like the current building, the original building, built in 1858, faced onto Willow Street. The extension (nearest building in photo) was on the northwest corner of Willow and Orchard.

Also at the Newberry birthday party, Mrs Diane Furuta, Kindergarden teacher and Golden Apple recipient, with students and Newberry’s birthday cake. All the students came out to the playground for the party, where they sang happy birthday and ate cupcakes!
We learned when attending Newberry in the 1950's that the school was used as a hospital following the Chicago Fire. It was on the edge of the fire area. There used to be a school song that was written by one of my teachers - Stella La Galla.
