4th grade, 1961
I have Bateman memories that still make me laugh (or at least smile). Some of the boys in my class had an obsession with drawing army scenes and I recall the sounds the boys who sat behind me would make while deep in the acts of creation ( putttt. crude flatulence like sound, BOOM, BOOM). Almost everyone loved singing and we all got very excited when the teacher passed out our songbooks. Among our favorites was Columbia the Gem of the Ocean- I still remember all the words and sing with gusto in the confiness of my car. BTW- I am the second seat third row. Would love to hear from anyone else in this picture.

Radio Host Joe Soto visits with our 1st grade gifted classroom at Bateman after the CPSAlumni Launch which was held at Bateman. The kids were thrilled to meet a celebrity!

Mayor Richard J. Daley visited Bateman in August of 1967 to promote a pilot program being tried out at 2 area schools. In 2008, his son, Richard M. Daley, came to Bateman for the kickoff of Saturday Enrichment Academy. During that time he was presented with 2 photos of his father that had been taken during his visit to Bateman in 1967.

Mayor Richard J. Daley visits Bateman to view results of the federal government's summer pilot program to create new techniques of career development in the 5th and 6th grades. Bateman was one of 2 city schools to participate in the experiment. As part of the program teachers and students took field trips each week. As part of the 8 week program, students also printed five editions of their own newspaper.

Graduation Banner
Lillian April
This gorgeous banner was received just a few weeks ago. It was donated to us by Ms. Lillian April from the Class of 1935. She wished for us to share it with all of us from Bateman.
We thank her so very much for her generous contribution of her graduation banner!

Hello,
I am the music teacher here at Bateman, and I'm looking for alumni that are involved in music. Are there people out there who play instruments, sing, or are involved in theatre. I would love to hear what alumni are up too!!
Sing-cerely,
Teresa Jazo

Class of 1978 I went to seven different schools n Chicago, Bateman is the one I remember the most. There was a teacher there, I think her name was Mrs Shoemacher and I think she taought geography, any way one day she made me stand in front of the class inside a garbage can, because I was acting up. Nothing like old school punishment. I don't remember what she taught so any help would be great. I think my home teachers name was Mrs. Ozborne. I only remember a small handful of kids in our class so if any one could identifiey starting at top left row that would be great. One of the students I remember, I believe his name was David Thomas. He was the class clown. He would do these funny dances and pretend he was Mork from " Mork & Mindy Show" I always wondered what happened to him. I thought maybe he's a Hollywood actor or something. One of my good friends was Danny Barnel. Not shure if spelling is right. He is second row, second student. I am second row 5th student. Ronald Helm I think is next to me on right. Second row 10th student is Richard, don't know last name. Second row 3rd student from left is Omar, again don't know last name. One day Omar invited me to his house. He lived across the street. he was one of the top students. he wanted to get a band together and we were in his room banging on tambourines listening to Winnie the poo. Don't tell anyone! I remember that day because he was very angry with me. His mom kept coming in the room and offering ice cream sandwiches. I think I had two plus some other snacks, and he was mad because there was none for his sister. His mom was just being polite offering the food and probably didn't think I would just keep eating. it's kind of funny the things kids will do.One year i entered the talent show. I did a magic act. i guess I didn't ever grow up because I am still doing magic, but Professionally. That was my first magic performance ever. I remember the store iI used to go to before going to school. I think it was Whiple store. Is that store still there? Probably not! One other memory was Danny Barnel and I were outside one day after school. he started throwing rocks on the roof. I followed. The next thing we know is there's a janitor standing next to us saying " You broke a window" My stepmother was in school with me to meet with principal the next day. My Principal at the time was Mr. Warner. He was on Phil Donahue one day during school. The teachers wheeled in tvs so we could watch. Donahue was interviewing him, and wife & kids on the show. He had 16 kids. Wow!!! Some strong jeans!!! Well thats all I can recall would be great to hear from you, and hear your stories. Hope you can identify some of the students in picture. also if anyone can tell me what grade this class picture was from, because i been to so many schools. Hard to keep track. Thanks Mark
As I was about to start the 8th grade in the 1991-1992 school year, CPS decided to move Bateman's 7th and 8th graders to "District One Middle School", which eventually became known as Thurgood Marshall Middle School.
Slight disappointment is that our class did not get to graduate 8th grade from Bateman in 1992.
Is this still done today?
Hi Everyone....
I'm a graduate (Class of '91) and work as the webmaster of the school site. I've now been working on archiving the school's history through photos and documents.
Believe it or not, there is no list of all of the principals who served at Bateman. That's why I need your help!
If you would, leave a comment here with the principal's name you had when you were in school and what year it was (so I can get a general feel for how long they might have been there).
I appreciate your help!
Thanks!
Britt

When I went to school at Bateman the playground was separated for boys and girls. Do they still do that today?

Hi. My son Michael attended Bateman too. I have several of his class photos and thought I would post them to share with others. Maybe you'll spot someone you recognize!

Do you remember when the library looked like this? Are the pictures on the walls in the photo still at Bateman?
These two photos show nicely how things have changed and stayed the same.

I was a part of the Class of 1955. On May 26th, 2000, we held our 45th year class reunion. It was wonderful to be back at the school and to see all of our old friends.

Do any of you remember the "Pollack Store" on Sacremento and Berteau? (That is what we called the store, not a racial slur).
During the 2005-2006 school year, Bateman decided to have a talent show. 3 of the Local School Council members are graduates of Bateman - Laura Bartoli, Nancy Birch, and myself. We were all very excited about the show... until we found out that we had to perform!
For weeks, 6 of us rehearsed a cute dance routine to the song "You've Got a Friend In Me". Despite the rehearsing, nothing could prepare us for the actual performance.
For the 3 of us Bateman Alumni, stepping foot on the stage to perform instantly transported us back in time to when we were students ourselves. Everything turned out great and we all had a fantastic time.
Pictured in the photo from left to right are: Britt Kalter, Laura Bartoli, Nancy Birch, Mr. Dasko (the Principal), Ms. Valkanas (teacher), and Mr. Lopez (teacher).

One of the best music teachers I have ever had was Mr. O'Brien. He was also the director of our school chorus. The photo is of the members of the 1990-1991 Bateman Chorus.
He was a great teacher... very patient, had much knowledge to offer the students, and made coming to music fun. I'm not sure when he left Bateman but I have heard that he works at Lane Tech now.

As you can see I attended Bateman a very long time ago. However, my memories of kindergarten are fresh in my mind. I had an awesome classroom. Of course, in my mind it is HUGE. It had a real slide! Not the little plastic ones, but the Horner Park ones. Do they still have those there? I live in Florida now. It also had a piano, a boy's playhouse and a girl's dollhouse. Of course, we had tables too where we learned our "ABC's". The school playground had a "boy's side and girl's side". Do they still do that?
