About Sullivan, W.K. Sullivan School

Sullivan, William K. (1843-1899) William K. Sullivan was born in Waterford, Ireland. In 1863 he came to the United States, where began teaching in Kane County, Illinois. He fought for the Union during the American Civil War, became a reporter in New York, and later moved to Chicago to work as a reporter for the Tribune. He then transferred to another Chicago paper, the Journal, as city editor, then managing editor, then correspondent. Sullivan served in many other prominent positions as well: he was a member of the Chicago Board of Education, a member of the Illinois legislature, and the United States Consul to the Bermudas during the Harrison administration.

Tom Powers--A Teacher's Teacher

Tom Powers--A teacher's teacher

I would like to pay tribute to my mentor, Tom Powers, who died last summer at the relatively young age of 73. He was a mentor to me without realizing it—most likely because he was a natural born teacher. In December of 1969, I was classified 1-A with the selective service and had just taken a draft physical, which I passed with flying colors based on my ability to breathe and walk upright.
