About Spry, John Spry Community School

Spry, John (1828-1891)  John Spry was born in Cornwall, England.  When he arrived in Chicago in 1843, he started working for a lumber dealer on Franklin Street.  In 1885 he acquired his own lumber company, which he called the John Spry Lumber Company, with lumber yards at Ashland and 22nd Street.  Spry was a member of the Board of Trade, a county commissioner, and a Mason.

Spry Memories

When I was a kid a remember that the chairs and desk were nailed to the floor.  I asked my teacher why and she said that the school was part of the cook county jail.  I aslo remember living across the street from the school and playing there all day untill I was ready to come home.

My graduation
