About Ruggles, Martha Ruggles Elementary School

Martha M.  Ruggles was born in Bainbridge, Michigan in 1846.  At age ten she and her family moved to Chicago, where she graduated from the Kinzie School and in 1864 from the Normal School. That same year she began a career in education that lasted until four days before her sudden death on May 29, 1923. 

Martha Ruggles served as a teacher at Franklin, Pearson, Newberry, Ogden and Kinzie Schools and as principal at the Henry M. Stanley School.  In addition, she was the first principal of the Chicago evening schools from 1885 to 1902.
