Luke O'Toole, who was born in Ireland in 1850 and came to the United States at age eighteen. He worked for the Armour Company and took an active civic role in the Town of Lake, his home for sixty years. He sat on the School Board of the Town of Lake and served as the town's postmaster. One of his sons, William O'Toole, became a Chicago alderman. Luke O'Toole owned a saloon at 47th and Halsted, which was a popular meeting place for politicians. Ole A. Thorp, chairman of the committee on naming Chicago's schools urged the removal of Luke O'Toole's name from the school because he owned a saloon.
