Walter Loomis Newberry was born on September 18, 1804 in East Windsor ,Connecticut. He arrived in Chicago in 1833 and founded Newberry & Birch, bankers. Seeing a rosy future for Chicago real estate, he purchased forty acres of land on the Near North Side at a cost of $1,100. Upon his death the land was valued at $2.5 million. He served as President of the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad and the Chicago Historical Society (now the Chicago History Museum). In his will, he left much of his $4 million estate to his wife Julia and their two daughters. After their deaths, the money was bequeathed to establish the Newberry Library. Walter L. Newberry died on November 6, 1868 while aboard a ship en route to Europe.
