William E. Dever (1862 - 1929): mayor of Chicago. Born in Woburn, Massachusetts; came to Chicago in 1887 to work in a tannery on Goose Island. Graduated from Chicago College of Law in 1890; was alderman 1902 - 1910; elected to Superior Court 1910; elected Mayor 1923. Wacker Drive was completed during his term. Date of death: September 3, 1929; Chicago

The first class I cut

I was in kindergarten. There were only 7 in our class, starting in Feb but this must have happened the next semester during morning kindergarten because I'm not sure we had outdoor recess in the afternoon. One of the boys in our class carried a school bag (this predated backpacks by decades) and probably never loosened his grip on it. It resembled a leather briefcase, not that it matters.

This photo is of the Dever School grade 6B – Room 307 and was taken about 1940 outside the school building. The students were studying Mexico at the time and some are dress up like what they thought people from Mexico would ware.

January 1942 Graduating Class

This photo was taken on January 29, 1942 of the Dever School Graduating Class. There were two classes graduating each year, one in January and one in June. The photo was taken in the gymnasium. Notice the mural on the wall. I remember seeing a faded version of this mural on the west gymnasium wall, when I went to the school there in the early 60’s.
