General Ambrose Everett Burnside (1824 - 1881): Military officer. Burnside was born in Indiana. He fought in the artillery in the Mexican War, established a factory of breach-loading rifles, served as an officer of the Illinois Central Railroad and was in command of the Army of Potomac. Burnside was elected Governor of Rhode Island in 1866 and served as a U.S. Senator from 1875-1881.
