About Attucks, Crispus Attucks Elementary School

Crispus Attucks was born in Massachusetts in 1723 of African-American and Native American descent; however, his exact date of birth and the town in which he was born are unknown.

In 1750 Crispus Attucks ran away from his life as a slave in Framingham Massachusetts and joined the whaling trade, shipping out of Boston on long voyages. An accomplished sailor and rope maker Crispus Attucks stood 6’2” tall.

Crispus Attucks is remembered as one of the first colonists to die in the War of Independence. Joining Samuel Adams in a protest against the presence of British troops in Boston, Crispus Attucks led a group of 50 men, shouting “Don’t be afraid.” He and four others were killed on March 5, 1770 in what became known as the Boston Massacre. His body was carried to Faneuil Hall in Boston where it was viewed for three days; 10,000 people attended his funeral.
