When the Chicago Public Schools bought the property at 6310 South Claremont Avenue, it was a Catholic school called Saint Rita High School. The school was named Simmye G. Anderson Community Academy on May 22, 1991. The new school originally bore the name Anderson, but with the decision that the old Anderson Academy should remain open in order to provide additional space for several hundred 8th graders, the name of the new school was changed to Claremont Academy.
