Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875): author. Andersen was born in a small town in Denmark to poor parents. He moved to Copenhagen when he was 14 to become an actor and dancer in theater; however, he found poetry and schooling and soon became a playwright and a folktale storyteller. He wrote "The Ugly Duckling," "The Little Mermaid," "The Emperor's New Clothes" and other stories.
