Named for one of the largest discount retail stores (at the time) in the country. Started by Milton and Irving Gilman in Massachusetts in 1958, the brothers opened their first store in the Ames Worsted Textile Co. mill in Southbridge, Massachusetts. At its height, Ames operated 700 stores in 20 states, including the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest and the District of Columbia. In 2000 Goldblatt's Department Stores leased six of its Chicago locations to Ames. The Ames Department Store chain closed all of its stores in 2002.
