The first few years that I attended Gresham School, it was predominantly white. In fourth grade the teacher came before our class to tell us that a colored family had enrolled in the school and that Linda would be in our class. She said that we should treat her as we would want to be treated.
I was excited the next day when Linda was seated in front of me, and we soon became friends. Whenever the teacher needed an errand to be run, she most often would pick us to go. One day before returning to the classroom, we traded shoes for the day. Linda's shoes were a lot cuter than my old saddle shoes, and they fit me perfectly.
Linda remained the only African American in our fourth grade class, but by the time I reached eighth grade, Gresham School had become predominantly African American. Now, I was the only white student in the class. And only then, did I have some sense of what it was like to be in Linda's shoes.

I remember day dreaming in Miss Griffin's class, a lot. More than once, I would be reading a book and get so absorbed in a story or picture that I would drift off into La la land. Then, I'd hear, wah, wah, wah... I would look up and obeying the rules, would raise my hand. Miss Griffin would say, "Yes, Leslie" and I would reply, "Miss Griffin, did you just say something?". To which she would retort, "Leslie, you are as slooow as Molasses in January." That would always get a big laugh.
One day, I sneezed. I cover my mouth, but for some reason the sneeze was quite loud. The whole class laughed uproariously. And a comedian was born! After that whenever I had to sneeze, I would try my darnedest to make it as loud as possible. It never failed to make my classmates and even Miss Griffin laugh. She said, she thought I was allergic to her.
Miss Griffin used the phonics method of reading and her classroom excelled. Even Me!

Photo 1 - I remember this picture so well, because my mother made these costumes and made us wear it for 3 years in a role. My sister (Lucy) and I were known as the Gipsy Sister until the day we graduated.
Photo 2 - I picked this 2nd picture, because I actually remember my Kindergarten year. My Teacher was Mrs. Jefferson and she was a tuff lady, but fair. She helped me get through the hardest 1st year of my education. The reason it was twice as hard for me was, because I didn't know a lick of English. Even though she would get very frustrated with me, she always smiled at the end. I will never forget her.

Days before Christmas of 1964 my mother found a beautiful green velvet dress on the bargain rack. Luckily for me, it was my size and not my sister Sandy's. I wore it to the usual holiday events and on picture day the following April of 1965. February of 1966, I wore the velvet green dress for school pictures again! I really didn't have any choice, but I did still love that dress. By the next years picture day, I had finally outgrown the dress. So...
My sister wore it!
P.S. I will try to get my sister's class picture to post. <3

One special day, John Albert, Bruce Dean and Paul Splaski gave a live performance in front of our fifth grade class. They were dressed like the FAB FOUR BEATLES, and we didn't even care that they only added up to three. THE BEATLES was emblazened across the front of their drums and at least one of them wore a beatles wig. I had a crush on Paul Splaski, but never dared to say a word to him. Who would have thought, I'd forget which BEATLE he was!

This is part of our family photos. I am African American so I am sure the African American child is one of my family members, possibly my great great uncle Lewellyn Higgins. Coleman school still exits today. My family The Higgins, according to the US Census 1910, lived in the 45th block of Gross Street(which does not exist). And most of the the men lived on the block were meat packers. All were white families. Except for the Higgins who were classified as mulattos.

Each year the graduating senior come together to sing songs of celebration dedicated to the staff, students and parents.

This was the first year that I shared the same classroom with my brother, Joe. A year older than me, Joe never hesitated to pass the newest findings down to me. I can remember as early as three years old, him telling me to stamp my feet when I passed the wooden floorboards of our neighbor's apartment. And, more often than not, the neighbor would open the door with a smile and a couple of cookies! I'm grateful for the many things Joe taught me and the time we had together. Below, is a song I wrote about Joe some time after his passing.
Sorry, I've tried several times to fix it, but the formatting is not coming out right for the song.

So long ago, my brother Joe,

I am sitting in the far left chair. My last name, "Kowalczyk" is spelled wrong, so others may be as well.

My parents had decided that my siblings and I were old enough to stay alone, while they went grocery shopping. Shortly after they left, my younger sister Sandy climbed onto the kitchen counter to hunt for chocolate. She managed to eat a couple of chocolate chips before falling. The next day she was a sensation, her stitches covered with a huge bandage.
You will find my sister Sandy in the 3rd row down, third from the left. In the same row, it looks like another girl was in some kind of a tangle. I wouldn't be surprised if it involved chocolate.

Hugh Hefner was one of the feature writers of The Steinmetz Star, the school newspaper

World renowned journalist and Fox News commentator Morton Kondracke
once attended the Stephen Gale school. Attached are a class photo of
him from 1949 and a more recent photo from Fox News. Mr. Kondracke did
not graduate from Gale School however; his family moved out of Chicago
about a year after the school photo was taken.

This is the morning kindergarten class of Gillespie Elementary (9301 S. State) in December of 1963. Compare this photo with the ones I submitted of the Gillespie Grade 8 class in 1972 - many of the same faces appear 9 years later. I'll leave the matching of names and faces across the years as an exercise for the reader. It always amazes me how little (and how radically) we all changed during those formative years at Gillespie. It really amazes me that everyone in this photo is now over 50 years old.
Wow - as I loaded this photo into the scanner I noticed that my mother has written names on the back of the photo. I've looked at the photo many times over the years, but could only put names to some of the faces. The list is incomplete, as she obviously depended on me (at age 4) to desribe who each person was.
Here is a transcription of what she has written:
Row 1: Raymond Williams, John ?, Darryl ?, unknown, Tarryl ?, Kevan ?.
Row 2: Annette Bryant, Barbara MacClinton, Frances Price, Janice Lock (Lott), Jenell ?, Angela Cole, Loraine ?.
Row 3: Earl Fredricks, Gregory Johnson, Clyde ?, unknown, unknown.
Row 4: Debra ?, Monica Casey, Margie Floyd, Marsha ?, Linda ?, Natalie Cummings, unknown, Cheryl ?, Sharon ?, Barbara ?.
If anyone can fill in some of the remaining names, let me know. Obviously I was better at remembering girls' names than boys' names. I'm in the picture too - find one of the two kids not looking at the camera - obviously forshadowing me in later life...

The Steinmetz Alumni Association founded in 1946, celebrated the 50 year of the school at a homecoming game.
4 decades of students were represented that day.

We are celebrating 75 years of the opening of Steinmetz High School in October, 2009.
The alumni association is currently looking for old photos, class "notables" and memorabilia that will be on display.

This is a picture of the Komensky School, June 1934, 8th grade graduation class. The principal was Mr. Anspaugh and the teacher on the right is Wanda Teschner, the 8th grade teacher. The teacher on the left is Mary McClory, my mother, who was the music teacher.
The Komensky School was at 19th and Throop in what was then called Pilsen. The school is now the Manuel Perez, Jr. The neighborhood was almost 100% Slovak, Bohemian and Polish. Many of the children could not speak English since they were new arrivals in this country. Their parents had come to Chicago to take jobs in the Stock Yards. There was no bi-lingual education and the teachers often resorted to putting signs saying “DOOR”, “WINDOW”, “DESK” etc. on objects around the room. Frequently they had teen-agers come to the school and stay just long enough to pick up a bit of English and then quit to find a job. Depending on what grade they were assigned to, the teen-agers had trouble fitting into the small desks! This was in the depths of the Depression and the teachers also knew that many of their students were going hungry. There were times when the staff came early to make pots of oatmeal to give the children before school started.
The teachers paid for these extras themselves as they also had to for supplementary workbooks, coloring books, etc. At this time during the Depression, the city was so short of funds that teachers were being paid in “scrip”…a sort of promissory note to stores that the scrip would be honored after the emergency. The problem was to find stores that would take the scrip in payment for food and clothing. One of the stores was Gately’s Peoples Store in Roseland. Although Roseland was far from where we lived, we shopped there for years out of gratitude for what the store did for teachers in the Depression.
My grandmother, Elizabeth Doran Wallace, taught at the Parkman School from 1897 until 1901 when she was married. (Married women teachers were not allowed.) My mother, Mary Wallace McClory, taught in the CPS from 1924 until 1968 (with time out for a maternity leave to have me in 1928.) She taught at Gunsaulus, Komensky, Libby, Yale and Stevenson. I taught at Morgan Park High School during the 1960s. My grandson, David Jewison, was a Teach for America teacher at Farragut Academy from 2002-2002,

I came home from school with this photo and showed it to my mother. I told her that I was going to marry the boy I pointed to in the picture. I'm seated in the second row, second girl from the right. The boy I pointed to is standing in the third row back, fourth boy from the right. I wish that the school had put the names of the children on the back of the photo because I never got those names. It is my hope that other class members will see this photo and add their names.

It was a tradition at Roosevelt High for the swim team to toss the head coach into the pool after winning a swim meet. Coach Ellis always went willingly - resistance was futile.

Mr. Charles Henderson directed a mixed choir and a girls chorus every year at Young School. This is a photo of us singing downtown (I think at the Board of Education) at Christmas. The girls' chorus even recorded an album called Rehearsals on Parkside. I still have it. We make amazing music, especially considering we were very young, in a classroom and the "recording engineers" were seventh grade students! This photo is of the mixed choir and the girls' chorus members are in the back. It would have been Christmas 1966.

My mother, Norma Fleischer Phillips, attended Lucy Flower from 1936-1940. She attended a few reunions, 1995 being the most current. Mom passed away in 2008, but always held a special place in her heart for her Lucy Flower classmates. I was able to take her back to the school one year before she died. She sure enjoyed that trip! Being able to stand at her entrance to the school brought back a lot of memories for her. I was certainly glad that I had the chance to take her back to her school and let her relive the memories. Mom graduated from Lucy Flower in 1940. Jane Karen Phillips

My Great Grandmother was an educator in the CPS in the 1930's. My Great Grandfather Matthew Hevenor was an administrator in the CPS as well. My Grandmother Holley Hevenor was a CPS teacher her entire career and I came across a series of negatives that she had in her house that had gone unseen for decades. I scanned these a few months ago and they revealed several scenes including a series of school children from Bradwell in the 30's. My great grandfather was a hobbyist photographer and took these photos as he was learning about photography.

Every Halloween in the 1950s, costumed Bradwell students would parade around the block on which the school is located. Each class would have a class picture taken before the parade started.
At night, the school would be open for a Halloween carnival/fun fair.
I do not know when the Halloween parade tradition started or when it ended. I do know that it was around throughout the 1950s.

My mother did not have a camera, but asked a gentleman if he would take pictures of us in exchange for 2 dollars. A few days later our pictures arrived in the mail. My brother and I were not very enamored with our images at the time. Unfortunately, my brother passed away several years ago and now, I adore these pictures.

This is the June 1930 graduating class of Nathaniel Pope School. I believe that Daniel Pope Cook, for whom Cook County is named, is a descendant of Nathaniel Pope. The photo was taken in Douglas Park across the street from the school, in front of a statue of Czech patriot Karel Havliceck. The statue is no longer at that location. I believe it was moved from Douglas Park to somewhere along the lakefront many years ago.
