SNOW DAY! - I was in grammar school for the storm of '67 and loved it. I remember all the men getting together and shoveling the streets. We had a huge fort with all kinds tunnels.
The storm of '79..or should I say storm after storm after storm. I was working and had an old '64 Ford Fairlane and it started every single day! I remember that was also the winter that they dug out Gacy's crawl space. I knew a guy that was working there and I don't think he was ever the same.
I remember the Snow of '67. The snow had blown drifts six feet tall along the sidewalks. Friends and I broke boxes up and rode down the hills that the snow plows had made. We had a blast. My dads car got stuck in a neighbors driveway. His wife was pregnant. I remember everybody working together to get the car out of the driveway so they could get her to the hospital. Which they did.
In '79, I had to look for my car as it was completely covered by the snow drifts and plows.
All I recall about 67 was going in the yard and making snow angels with my dad. The snow was far taller than me :-) The one from the 70's was during my sophmore year... I am thinking it had to be early 1978? I remember because I remember walking to school with Manny in a cavern of snow all around us.
I remember the snow in "67" Everything in the city, STOP. My mother and I had to walk all the way to Jewel's just to get some milk and eggs. I thought then that was the longest walk that I had every taken and that I don't know how in the world my mother made it there and back. I had never seen in my life whereas the trains, buses, cars where all over the place and that the snow had covered everything running. I tell my grandkids about it and they laugh at me and say come on nana that never happened. I am glad that there is a picture of this because, the one that I have they told me it wasn't real. : )
Everything was closed the schools, because no one was able to get home. The store was open because it had snowed so bad that teachers and the worker at jewels couldn't even get to there homes. Because everything was at a stop. NOT MOVING AT ALL............
I REMEMBER THAT WOW! I LIVED ON THE CORNER OF CAMPBELL AND NORTH AVE ON THE 3RD FLOOR.SO WE GOT A BIEDS EYE VIEW AND YOU ARE CORRECT WE HAD TO WALK EVERYWHERE JUST TO GET WHAT WE NEEDED.WHAT I TOOK WITH ME FROM THAT EXPERIENCE WAS THAT BACK THEN PEOPLE ALL STOOD TOGETHER AND HELPED EACH OTHER! WE WERE ALL UNITED AND WE AS A COMMUNITY AND AS A FAMILY ! I WISH THIS WAS THE CASE THESE DAYS BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT HAS BECOME A MEMORIE JUST AS THE BLIZZARD

I remember the snow of 67 and the winter of 78-79. If you search the net for the snow of 67 you will find some wonderful pictures that will jog your memory. One such site is http://www.islandnet.com/~see/weather/events/chisnow1967.htm
I lived around Addison and Forest Preserve Drive at the time.
And a good time was had by all.
