Since its inception in 1934, the Chicago Prep Bowl has enjoyed a special place in the hearts of high school football enthusiasts in Illinois. From the days when record crowds would turn out to watch a high school football team to the present, the Chicago Prep Bowl has always been a magical stage on which young athletes have felt honored to perform.

Over the past 74 years, many storied games, athletes, and coaches have been to the mountain top of Chicagoland prep football. Players such as Budd Young; Abe Woodson; Keena Turner; Ronald Pennick; Kevin King; Jim Grabowski; Mickey Pruitt; Donovan McNabb; Rausell Harvey; Dennis Lick and Andre Gilbert have been the talk of the town among high school football fans throughout the years.

Legendary coaches like Bernie O’Brien, Tom Winecki, J.W. Smith, Joe Magee, Roy Curry, Al Scott and many others have inspired thousands of young men to be the best they could be on and off the field. We proudly congratulate this year’s honorees as we celebrate the Chicago Prep Bowl: A Lakefront Tradition.

Former JUF board member gives back to his alma mater in a big way

When Larry Sherman left the halls of Robert Emmet Elementary School in Chicago's Austin neighborhood as a graduate in 1943, he likely never imagined he would later return to the much-changed school as "Principal for a Day."

Sherman, who served on the board of directors of the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation for nealy 20 years, is a volunteer for Mayor Daley's Principal for a Day program, which places about 1,200 representatives from local organizations and business at Chicago schools to attend classes and meet students, in the hopes that those representatives will then help support the schools financially, with manpower or otherwise. After participating in the program for several years, Sherman got assinged to his elementary school alma mater, and quickly realized how much it had changed.

Throughout the 1930s, 40s and 50s, the student body at Emmet was primarliy Jewish, but today nearly 100 percent of Emmet students are African American and 99 percent are living at the poverty level.

After visiting the school for several years, Sherman sat in on a teachers' meeting and asked them what they needed. Their response, he said showed that the need for assistance was overwhelming: money for field trips, required novels for eight-grade English, paper to print copies of lessons - and that was just the tip of the iceberg.

"That was more or less the catalyst to get started," Sherman said. "I knew that I personally would write a check, but I wanted to expand beyond that."

So, about three years ago, he reached out to some friends who were also Emmet alums and formed the Friends of Robert Emmet Steering Committee, which now has about a dozen members. They complied a mailing list and sent letters asking people to participate and send them other names of alums. Today they are in contact with about 400 Emmet alums.

"These kids have very little," Sherman said. "So we got together to figure out what can we do for the school."

Several of the alums, Sherman said, including Howard Altman, Bruce Bachmann and Larry Glick, are also very active members of Chicago's Jewish community as well as a part of the JUF family. Together they are showing that Jews don't just help out within their own community, but have a vested interest in the community at large.

"For some reason there's a certain affinity for Emmet," said committee memebr Altman. "Our goal is to expand our mailing list in order to raise more money to do as much as we can for the kids."

SInce the formation of the committee several years ago, they have provided funding for school field trips, eight-grade English books, paper and so much more. They brought in speakers, like professional football players, the head of the Culinary Institute in Chicago for the older students and the Kohl McCormick StoryBus for the younder students. Some children come to school in T-shirts during the winter, Sherman said, so the committee donated clothing and put together a "clothing closet" for the students to use while at school. Sherman's granddaughter, a Girl Scout, collected books, and Howard Zar, another committee member, formed a social group that remodels old bicycles, which were then distributed to 15 students based on attendance, grades and good attitudes.

"Our biggest achievement so far was when we sent 21 kids to the Austin YMCA this past summer," Altman said. "When the kids were leaving at the end of the four weeks they were crying, they were so appreciateive." With some extra funding they were able to send some of the students to camp for an additional week.

Most recently, Sherman and Altman personally delivered backpacks, in Emmet's colors and embroidered with the school mascot's logo, an eagle, for the first, second and third-grade students.

"What we're frustrated about is how little the Chicago Public Schools do," Sherman said. In the coming years, he said, they hope to start mentoring and reading programs and to expand the camp program each summer.

Emmet assistant pricipal Terrence O'Reilly said he is grateful to the Friends of Robert Emmet School for providing the students with supplies and opportunities they might not have been able to have otherwise.

"They still feel a strong connection to the school and have been very helpful to us over the last several years," O'Reilly said. "They just don't talk about what they'd like to do, they really have acted on it."

Englewood High School Drama Club 1965-68

One of my favorite memories of the years I attended Englewood (64-68) is of The Drama Club. The sponsor, Ms Carrie Davis shared so much history of theatre, especially Black people's contributions. From Ms Davis I learned that Othello was Black and that Paul Robeson was one of America's greatest. I made some life-long friends and participated in some classical productions, such as "Arsenic and Old Lace". My social knowledge base was greatly enhanced because of my experience at Englewood High School. I was honored to have served as President of The Drama Club from 1966 to 1968.

Penner

Penner was a game played against the eastern wall of Shakespeare School with tennis balls using baseball terms. The "pitcher" would throw the tennis ball against the side of the building and based on whether it was caught by the person behind him or not and how far it went before it landed, it was classified as a single, double, triple or home run accordingly. Every day, the east side of the school was filled during recess with kids playing penner. This was half a century ago! My parents moved to the suburbs the summer after I finished grade school, but my experiences at Shakespeare school remain some of my fondest from my youth. Unfortunately, I was unable to go to my graduation as I was recovering from chicken pox and could not go back to school while I still had blisters. I spent many lonely afternoons at the Ken theater on 47th street where a double feature cost 10 cents.

January 1942 Graduating Class

This photo was taken on January 29, 1942 of the Dever School Graduating Class. There were two classes graduating each year, one in January and one in June. The photo was taken in the gymnasium. Notice the mural on the wall. I remember seeing a faded version of this mural on the west gymnasium wall, when I went to the school there in the early 60’s.

Great Music by CPS Alumni

Chicago is one of the great music capitals of the world, so it should come as no surprise that CPS alumni are among the most important and influential musicians of the last century.

To celebrate the accomplishments of our former students, CPSalumni.org has created an iMix on iTunes comprised entirely of our alumni's work for you to enjoy. Click here to view the playlist on iTunes. Otherwise, playlist is copied below.

Most of the musicians listed below were tracked down to CPS via the graduation records (1873-1973) available through CPSalumni.org. If you attended or worked for the Chicago Public Schools, or have family who did, we invite you to register for free now.

With too many chart topping songs to choose from, this is only a humble sample of the some the great musicians and music from CPS alumni. Many of the best sidemen, studio, and touring musicians for hire in the business are also CPS alumni. Other popular musicians like Rhymefest, and DaBrat also attended CPS schools; unfortunately, their lyrics were too strong for inclusion here. Also, we are certain Grammy winner Lupe Fiasco attended CPS, but don't know what school(s).
Newberry Celebrates 150 years

Join the staff and students of one of Chicago's oldest elementary schools,
Walter L. Newberry Academy for Math and Science, celebrate its 150th
birthday TODAY Thursday, September 18 with music, dancing and cake,
beginning at 11 am!

Founded in 1858, Newberry School was the 11th elementary school in the
young city, and was named for Walter L. Newberry, real estate investor,
banker and commission merchant, who donated the land at the corner of
Willow and Orchard Streets, the same site the school sits on today.

Newberry School has been providing quality education to young Chicagoans
since before the Civil War! When Newberry School opened Chicago was much
smaller than it is today. In 1858 Chicago's city limits were Fullerton
Avenue to the north, Western Avenue to the west, Ridgely Place (now 31st
Street) to the south, and the lake to the east. Newberry School was one of
only a few to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and was used as a
shelter and hospital for those made homeless by the fire. Notable alumni of
Newberry include Charles Wacker, namesake of Wacker Drive and Chairman of
the Chicago Plan Commission, champion of Daniel Burnham's Plan of Chicago
of 1909.

Festivities begin Thursday, September 18 in the playground at the corner
of Willow and Burling Streets at 11am sharp with opening remarks from Arne
Duncan, CEO of Chicago Public Schools, and other dignitaries. The entire
school body will be on the playground for a school-wide photo shoot,
dancing, singing, and of course, birthday cake. Other events will take
place throughout the year.

Please join us to celebrate this milestone in one of Chicago’s finest
elementary schools as we embark on our next 150 years!

A.A. Wagner - 1935

I graduated from Haugan School in 1935 with one particular memory that hasn't left me in 73 years. Miss Wagner, my English teacher, was quite fond of quoting Ben Jonson. Ever the elocutionist, I can still hear her to this day, standing in front of the class saying, "Language most shows the man; speak that I may see thee". I recently rediscovered my 8th grade autograph book. Lo and behold, there is Miss Wagner's entry and I'm sure you know what she wrote!

My favorite teacher at Haugan was Miss Ter Bush.

Mrs. Stapleton, a math teacher, is in the midst of the crowd, not looking overly enthusiastic.

I remember this day distinctly. The girl dressed as a "cigarette girl" (Yvonne Caspers) was the heartthrob of the neighborhood.

The second picture has names of the kids in room 207.

1938 Kindgarten Class

I attended McClellan School for kindergarten for one year. My mother would walk over from 38th & Halsted and walk me home from school. My mother would also pick me up from school and we would go to Comiskey Park on Ladies Day. It was Tuesdays and Fridays. Ladies would get in to the game for a nickel. These were the first games that I saw the White Sox play. I am currently and forever a White Sox fan.

My dad also attended McClellan until 6th grade. He would have been there during the period 1909-1916. If anyone has class pictures from this time period, I would love to see them. His name was and my name is Edwin L. Snyder.

Well, I was going through my old photos and stumbled upon a few photos from the Crane Class of 1980's Prom at the Holiday Inn Chicago City Centre near Navy Pier. Prom always seems like a magical night, the girls are dressed so elegent and the guys are so formal. For some guys this was probably the first and last time they wore a Tux, I know for me it was just the first of many more times to come. Do any of you still have your Prom Night photos?

Favorite Teachers

I don't have a favorite teacher in all categories, but my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Mary L. Sharkey, was one of the most popular teachers during my time at Gregory. Mrs. Andersen, in 4th grade, was fair and understanding, and she listened to my small voice. Mr Greenstein, in 6th grade, was the first male teacher I had other than the gym teacher, Mr. Naden. Mr. Greenstein wrote a book in 1985 titled, "What the Children Taught Me." Mr. Greenstein told our class how he passed the time when he was in the military by playing cards, specifically poker. Mr. Greenstein's son, Barry, became a well-known, high-stakes poker player besides his scholastic achievements. For pure, almost-daily fun, though, I'd say Mrs. Mary 'Lucky' Sharkey was my favorite teacher. She made students compete and sing loud so that the entire school would hear us. When she played the piano, her strong hands made the flowers in a vase on top shake.

Two Dedicated Teachers and Friends

Two of the most dedicated teachers at Schurz High School when I was a student there where Miss Levickas and Ms. Whiting. Both teachers were outstanding at what they did best...TEACH. But most of all, they cared about their students. I was a troubled teen in my junior year and both teachers made an effort to help me get through those 'tough' times and taught me that I didn't have to give up. Miss Levickas would pack me a lunch EVERYDAY and Ms. Whiting showed me that English Literature was not as hard as I thought and that I actually did understand Shakespeare. It's because of teachers like them, that I able to give school a second chance and actually move on and do something with myself. I will never forget them and I wish more teachers were as dedicated as they were.

Class of June 1959

We were the "big kids" then until reality set in and we found ourselves wandering down those long hallways in high school. Remember forming a group outside the home room at Canty and then going to gym class or the library? It was similar to the foriegn tour groups you see being escourted to an attraction by the tour director. I guess, in retrospect, it would have been pretty unrealistic to expect grade school kids to all arrive at the next class on time!

The Class of June 1959 left Canty and each of us began our individual adventures. Three of us, Walt Burandt, Tom Zapel and I, went to Lane Tech. Jim Parochelli went to Fenwick and the rest of the Class went to Steinmetz.

Where are they now? If you were one of the June 1959 class or know one who was, please share a memory!
