"Pinners" was a ball game the boys used to play at recess and lunch. The game received it's name from the "pinner" of the building (which is the name for the architectural feature, the ledge, that protrudes from one or more sides of a building). We would bounce our rubber ball off the pinner and depending on the angle on which we struck the ledge, it would fly high or low.
The School Safety Patrol Program was headed by Mr. John Davis who was the schools Gym Teacher. At the time, I was the Captain (1st row, far left) and my Lieutenant was Bruce Richardson (1st row, 2nd from the right). Johnny Der (1st row, 3rd from right) was one of my best friends.

It's great to be able to communicate with my first school, Daniel Boone Elementary School on the North Side of Chicago. I have a November birthday, so I was not quite 5 years old when I started Kindergarten in Mrs. O'Conner's classroom in the Fall of 1964. Mrs. O'Conner was a wonderful Kindergarten teacher, kind and patient. I remember drawing a "cornucopia" for Halloween 1964.
I read in the newspaper this past weekend that Mrs Lussenhop died on October 9 2009 at the age of 101. I believe only those who attended Flower in the 50's and 60's might remember her.

My first day at Wards was a different one. I had been bused their from my previous school Haven which was closed after my sisters graduated in '74. As i exited the bus i had a fight with Paul Chow(later Jerry Chow) who became my best friend. It's weird how thing turn out sometimes. I still have a piece of lead in my hand from that fight,my pencil stabbed me in the hand.
Mrs. Thomys was a teacher who enchanted students with positives. Her room was a magical place. She shared her kindness and generosity and love of life openly with students.
Facts about Mrs. Thomys:
She escaped from East Germany by climbing over the Berlin wall, when she was just a girl.
She spoke German and taught us German folk songs.
There were four Berger's that attended Reilly school This is my older brother Robert Berger standing with the black tie next to the teacher. Do you know anybody? The 7th grade picture (BoB)Robert got a seat that year and is the second roll 4th seat.

The first few years that I attended Gresham School, it was predominantly white. In fourth grade the teacher came before our class to tell us that a colored family had enrolled in the school and that Linda would be in our class. She said that we should treat her as we would want to be treated.

Claude Peters has written a lengthy memoir of his experiences growing up in the Jahn School neighborhood. The last half of the memoir is devoted to memories of his 9 years (from 1943 to 1951) as a student at Jahn. There are a lot of photos that accompany the memoir.

The First Annual AlRaby Spring Break College Tour turned out to be a Great Success!
With Appearances by students from the Class of 2008 at their respective schools, the college tour experience was a memorable and exciting experience for all the students that attended.
I remember living on the north side of Foster. Back then we all crossed the street with a woman crossing guard. I can't remember her name, but I remember her, she had a snazy uniform and cap. She was really super nice and a sweet lady.

Two CPS Alums, Bob Sirott and Anna Davlantes, co-anchored the Chicago NBC 5 news broadcast this week. Could be the first time two Chicago Public Schools grads have done that. Sirott is an alum of Roosevelt and Davlantes is an alum of Disney and Lane Tech.

Ditto Machines.....
Back in the 60's (soooooooooooooooo long ago)....does anyone remember the ditto machines? The ditto paper when printed, had the most wonderful smell. I remember many tests that were taken on the paper run thru the ditto machine (the ink was blue). BZ
Hugh Hefner sent the following photos to us, we thank him for sharing his memories with CPSalumni.org
This gorgeous banner was received just a few weeks ago. It was donated to us by Ms. Lillian April from the Class of 1935. She wished for us to share it with all of us from Bateman.
We thank her so very much for her generous contribution of her graduation banner!

This is the graduation picture of one of my dear neighbor/friends when I was growing up. I knew her by Lillian Ladewig... I don't know her maiden name.. It may have been Geils, or that may have been her first husband's name - I'm not sure.
She's the first person from the left in the second row.
Crane Class of 1969 gives back to Crane seniors during 40th reunion year
At Cuffe School, Miss Carlucci was my 3rd grade teacher who was the first adult to take me seriously as a future president of the U.S. She was young, single, and living a downtown Chicago life that I could see myself in at some point. She was fun and a joy to be around. That kind of encouragement, along with her exposing us to "South Pacific" as well as other music, was just what I
Now we know why generations of Calumet chemistry students lived to tell about their bungled experiments... :)
Bill Doornbos
(As an interesting (?) aside, the foreground of the photograph shows a nice shot, not of the chemistry lab, but of the auditorium, which, I assume, did not really require acid-proof drain-pipes.)
As I understand it, Brenan's harmonica band was formed during the war years when other more expensive instruments were difficult to come by. This one met and practiced from February through June, 1941, led by Claribel Moroney Nayder. They performed at the Palmer Park Spring Festival, 1941.
Just returned from a delightful journey back in time to Coonley, to reflect on how it looked today. The tour started with the present principal, Katherine Kennedy-Karthheiser. She couldn't have been more pleasant and charming. While the tour focused mainly on the curriculum, I managed to see what I had come for, the building and facility itself.
Here's the first group of kids I came to know after coming to Trumbull in October 1960 for 2nd grade.
My older brother and I attended this school for about 3 years from about 1958 to 1961. During those 3 years my brother also served as a crossing guard. Once he was helping students to cross the street and he himself slipped on the icy street and broke his nose.
Mrs. Nayder was my great-aunt. She taught her entire career of over 40 years and three generations of students at Brenan. The following is from an article printed in the Chicago Tribune 1-18-1970. Maybe some of you still remember her. She passed away in Wheaton, IL in 1998 at the age of 96.
South Side Teacher to Be Honored
Thomas John Waters is my great-grandfather. The plaque shown in the photo came from one of the boilers at a school in the late 1970s. It was given to me in 1981 by a retired employee of the Chicago Public School System. Thomas J. Waters invented the system of heating and ventilation that was used in the Chicago Public Schools until World War II.
Class of 1978 I went to seven different schools n Chicago, Bateman is the one I remember the most. There was a teacher there, I think her name was Mrs Shoemacher and I think she taought geography, any way one day she made me stand in front of the class inside a garbage can, because I was acting up. Nothing like old school punishment. I don't remember what she taught so any help would be great.
I attended Bradwell School until the 6th grade - only remember a couple of these classmates names. Do you recognize yourself or others? The Bradwell Life is a November 1947 edition.
SCHOOL WAS NEVER ONE OF MY HIGH LIGHTS I STRUGGLED TO RECEIVE THE GRADES I GOT , THE TWO GIRLS I HUNG AROUND WITH WERE YOTA LALOS AND KAREN FOY . THEY WERE THE SMART GIRLS IN SCHOOL AND FUN TO BE WITH .. MISS SHIRLEY APPEL WAS MY FAVORITE TEACHER .. MR BILLHORN WAS OUR PRINCIPAL ...... I HAD TO LEAVE IN THE 6TH GRADE AND I HATED IT . WONDER WHERE EVERYONE IS TODAY .
Read about Kenwood Academy Class of 1984 grad in the film and music industry.
When Larry Sherman left the halls of Robert Emmet Elementary School in Chicago's Austin neighborhood as a graduate in 1943, he likely never imagined he would later return to the much-changed school as "Principal for a Day."
Penner was a game played against the eastern wall of Shakespeare School with tennis balls using baseball terms. The "pitcher" would throw the tennis ball against the side of the building and based on whether it was caught by the person behind him or not and how far it went before it landed, it was classified as a single, double, triple or home run accordingly.
This photo is of the Dever School grade 6B – Room 307 and was taken about 1940 outside the school building. The students were studying Mexico at the time and some are dress up like what they thought people from Mexico would ware.
This photo was taken on January 29, 1942 of the Dever School Graduating Class. There were two classes graduating each year, one in January and one in June. The photo was taken in the gymnasium. Notice the mural on the wall. I remember seeing a faded version of this mural on the west gymnasium wall, when I went to the school there in the early 60’s.
I got these pictures from a classmate I went to schoool with.
Oh my goodness....... "What memories these pictures brought back."
also makes you wonder - "What ever happened to ???"
There are two seperate photo's - do look for the other if your not in this one.
