Looking to Help Gary

Over the past year I have become friends with some of the faculty and students at Joseph Gary Elementary on Chicago's near south side. On my last visit I made a small list of some of the things that they are in desperate need of and I keep that list on my desk.

I am not asking you for monetary donations but instead for you to just keep them in mind. It is hard enough to get through a school day in a tough neighborhood in south Chicago but to walk into a school that is gloomy and falling apart makes it that much harder. In your everyday life, if you happen to come across a friend, business associate, colleague or client who may have one of these items available to them that they are able to donate, keep Gary Elementary School in mind.

The funds from their budget that they would use to acquire the items from this list have to be directed towards other necessities such as books, security and other day to day needs for the kids. I won't harass you with emails and I won't call to bother you. If you happen to know someone who can help please don't hesitate to call or email me and I will make sure all donations will be as convenient as possible.

  • Paint for the classrooms (something a little brighter than the 15 year old, peeling gray paint that they have now)
  • Sandblast the graffiti off the exterior walls
Tuck pointing for the buildings (some of the bricks are beginning to fall)
  • Material to use as drapes for the auditorium windows (they are currently using a dark brown shower curtain type of material)
  • and last but not least, the school has a wireless cable network for the few computers that they have in the classrooms that doesn't work because of the old solid walls. If you know of someone who can consult them on what options they may have with the current system.

Thank you.
