About Whitney Young Dolphins Making A Difference

Whitney Young Dolphins Making A Difference (WYDMAD) will celebrate its first anniversary on November 12, 2010.  Nine Whitney M. Young Magnet High School alumni formed WYDMAD in direct response to the senseless and tragic murders of Chicago Public School students.  WYDMAD’s mission is to provide critical resources to Chicago Public School children in an effort to shape better students and productive citizens. WYDMAD has sought to accomplish this goal by using the diverse backgrounds of its members to embrace, educate, and empower youth in transitional age groups.

Since November of 2009, WYDMAD has created two initiatives for the purpose of giving back to Chicago public school students.  WYDMAD formed a school-based mentoring and tutoring program for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students at West Pullman Elementary School.  Their mentors provide students with academic support and character development education. WYDMAD also supports the social and academic growth of current Whitney Young freshmen.  WYDMAD’s programs instill a spirit of excellence in the children they serve.  The ultimate goal of the organization is to see children become a vehicle of change in their homes, their schools, and their communities.

We all have fond memories of going to Racine Cafe for lunch.  Unfortunately, it’s been a few years since the Racine Cafe closed it's doors, however it’s a hot new spot which is now called Union Park Loung.  The Union Park Lounge attracts a crowd of young professionals looking for a much-needed place to kick back amidst the West Loop scene.  The evening will include a wide variety of hors d'ouvres, drink specials and a Commemorative Class of 99 gift bag with surprise treats!

I remember back in the 1980s, the Secretary of Education made some unflattering remarks about Chicago
Public Schools. As a third generation CPS student and son of two CPS teachers, I took his comments
personally. When I was a member of the state champion Academic Decathlon team, my teammates and I felt more
pride to be part of CPS than we were of just our school. Perhaps we had inflated the importance of our victory, but we felt that we had proven that the Chicago Public Schools could outpace even the finest suburban schools.
