Crane Class of 1969 gives back to Crane seniors during 40th reunion year

The Crane High School Class of 1969 joined CPS officials today to announce a $50,000 grant from the Ebert Foundation to fund scholarships for the Crane Class of 2009. As part of their 40th reunion activities, Crane Class of 69 representatives, Chaz Ebert, Larry Beasley, Marvin Smith, Joshlyn Dortch Banks, Rosemary Slack Taylor, Marie Crump Oliver, and Jennie Hatch came together to give back to this year’s senior class. The group challenged CPS alumni to develop their own initiatives at high schools citywide.
As part of Crane’s celebration of Black History Month, Class of 1969 alumni returned to discuss their experiences growing up in the turbulent 1960s. More than 200 students gathered to hear the stories of the men and women who sat in the same classrooms 40 years ago.
“We want these students to remember that it’s important to know where you came from and that they stand on the shoulders of those who came before them. We’re doing everything we can to give them a helping hand because they represent our future,” Chaz Ebert said.
Crane seniors will be eligible for scholarships ranging from $500-5,000 that can be used to pay tuition at a four-year college, junior college or accredited trade school. To apply, Crane seniors must submit an essay on how they intend to give back to their community.
The Class of 1969 is also offering seniors an opportunity to take a class trip to the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Library in Springfield to view exhibits on the many African-American leaders. In addition, the Class of 1969 will donate computers to Crane families after parents complete 3-5 computer training workshops provided at the school.
“Our students benefit so much just from talking with alumni. They see adults who were once in their shoes, who have worked hard and achieved success. Knowing that they have people who believe in them and are willing to invest in them is so important,” said Richard Smith, principal of Crane High School.
