Marshall We Are Loyal To You and Proud To Be Commandos
You’ve heard it several times before, and it seems that most of us have been and will continue doing it because it’s as natural as breathing: Most of you don’t even have to think about it. For some, however, it takes a little effort or prompting.
What I’m referring to doesn’t cost you anything. Yet the benefits are unlimited. It’s powerful, medicinal and contagious.
In case you’re still guessing, “You need to smile more!” Is smiling a cure-all for the cares of the world? I don’t suggest that it is. If all you do is smile, your cares won’t go away. However, I do believe it’s a deliberate attempt to attract positive people who may otherwise avoid you. These people may have the advice or encouragement that you need. While the ultimate responsibility for making things better rests with you, in my opinion it’s a good thing to know that (in addition to knowing that GOD will always be there for you) you’re not alone; others are also concerned about you.
Will smiling make the pains go away? Perhaps partially or temporarily, and that may provide enough time to refocus on possibilities and priorities. Turn those frowns upside down, and feel the power of positivity (James 1:2-7; Philippians 4:13).

Alcott School is celebrating its 115th anniversary. In honor of this significant milestone in the School's history, Friends of Alcott School, an Illinois not-for-profit, is sponsoring a fall family event to take place at the school on Saturday, October 4th from 3-6pm. The event, entitled "CELEBRATE 115", is themed after the Columbian World's Exposition held in Chicago in 1893, the very same year the school opened its doors under the name of Louisa May Alcott School. CELEBRATE 115 will allow students and families to explore activities from the World's Fair with a passport to various theme-related stations. The event, will also include a show by Radio Disney, entitled "Chicago History Tour Express," a concert by musical guest, Seth Decker and the Missing Piece, face painting by local artist, Trish Page, Molly's Cupcake Walk, bouncers, a Soccer Clinic, Food, Drinks and other Goodies.

The Newberry Color Guard enters with the Chicago, Newberry, and US flag
The Newberry Color Guard marches to drumbeats, across the playground where the student body is assembled for the 150th birthday celebration.
The students recite the Pledge of Allegiance when the flags are posted.
Mr Arne Duncan, CEO of Chicago Public Schools, addressing the students, congratulating them on their hard work and encouraging them to give themselves a round of applause.
Alderman Vi Daley reads a motion that the City Council approved, marking the signifcance of Newberry’s 150th anniversary year and accomplishments throughout its history.

Join the staff and students of one of Chicago's oldest elementary schools,
Walter L. Newberry Academy for Math and Science, celebrate its 150th
birthday TODAY Thursday, September 18 with music, dancing and cake,
beginning at 11 am!
Founded in 1858, Newberry School was the 11th elementary school in the
young city, and was named for Walter L. Newberry, real estate investor,
banker and commission merchant, who donated the land at the corner of
Willow and Orchard Streets, the same site the school sits on today.
Newberry School has been providing quality education to young Chicagoans
since before the Civil War! When Newberry School opened Chicago was much
smaller than it is today. In 1858 Chicago's city limits were Fullerton
Avenue to the north, Western Avenue to the west, Ridgely Place (now 31st
Street) to the south, and the lake to the east. Newberry School was one of
only a few to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and was used as a
shelter and hospital for those made homeless by the fire. Notable alumni of
Newberry include Charles Wacker, namesake of Wacker Drive and Chairman of
the Chicago Plan Commission, champion of Daniel Burnham's Plan of Chicago
of 1909.
Festivities begin Thursday, September 18 in the playground at the corner
of Willow and Burling Streets at 11am sharp with opening remarks from Arne
Duncan, CEO of Chicago Public Schools, and other dignitaries. The entire
school body will be on the playground for a school-wide photo shoot,
dancing, singing, and of course, birthday cake. Other events will take
place throughout the year.
Please join us to celebrate this milestone in one of Chicago’s finest
elementary schools as we embark on our next 150 years!

To Whom It May Concern,
This is to inform you that the address of Lawson was on Homan Ave. I would have to reference the exact address. The photo you list is the picture of Lawson, however, the address is that of the Hess Upper Grade Center which was located 3500 W Douglas BL.
Lawson's name was never changed. It was closed down shortly after I graduated which was June, 1956. Please know that the address of the Hess UGC was 3500 W Douglas. I taught there upon my graduation from college.

Thank you to everyone at Tilton Elementary for a wonderful Centennial Festival. It was a lovely event and I am grateful for the opportunity to meet and speak with so many Tilton alumni. Congratulations to Ms. Clancy and her crew for their success in pulling it off so beautifully. - Brad Harbaugh, Editor, CPSalumni.org
What a wonderful time was had by all who attended. While I don't have any number of attendees, I can tell you that I personally had a wonderful time. Furthermore, I can also speak for my contacts that they too had a great time.
I am sure there will be additional comments and I know that the CPS will be adding lots of wonderful photos etc to this site, I just want to say that those who were unable to attend missed a great day.
The day started out with entertainment from the House of Blues. They performed for over an hour and young and old enjoyed the music and the history of Jazz. We laughed, sang and some even danced.......especially Ms Johnson!
The kids performed from the World Language Arts/Dance entertained us as well. You missed seeing these young people dance and sing. Hopefully, us older folks will be around when some of them make it BIG because they were great.
The day ended with a balloon launch. My first thoughts were that the students enjoyed what was going on inside. But once outside, you could see how much they enjoyed the end ofTHEIR day as well.
The students couldn't have been sweeter or nicer to the alumni which dated back to 1942.
Tilton has alot to be proud of and the present teachers love what they do, love their students and love OUR Tilton.
Thank you all and especially Ms Clancy.

As Teacher for a Day, I had the honor of reading a book about bats to the students of Mrs. Nelson's class. They had questions about the differences between bats and birds and mammals and reptiles and more specifically, what category birds fell under. I challenged them to find the answer and email it to me. Here is their response - it is typical of the dialog quest for knowledge that takes place in room 303 every day.
Mr. Brad,
We want to thank you for coming to our classroom last week. You were a lot of fun, and we especially liked flying around the room like bats. We have been researching to find out if birds are considered reptiles. We have read many different books, and used web sites to find an answer. We found out that Birds have their own category when you classify animals, so they are not reptiles. One interesting thing that we did find out is that birds and reptiles have some things in common (like laying eggs) which causes some scientists to believe that they belonged to the same group during the time of the dinosaurs. We would love for you to come back to Room 303 anytime, and thank you again.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Jennifer Nelson and the students of Room 303
New Field School
As editor of CPSalumni.org, I get to be involved in some pretty cool activities here at CPS. Topping them all might be the day I spent as Teacher for a Day at New Field Elementary School. At New Field I met excellent teachers at the top of their game and terrific students hungry to learn (and who know how to have a good time.)
I visited the class rooms of Ms. Sanders' and Ms. Nelson's 2nd grade classes and Ms. Felix's 3rd grade class. In each, I had the opportunity to read a story, assist with a lesson and do a Q & A session. I was impressed with the way the students worked together and treated their classmates with respect. Also impressive was the way the teachers navigated them through the lessons. The pace was fast and the students were actively engaged throughout the day.
There is a lot of pride at New Field, and I can tell you it is well earned. As a resident of Rogers Park, it is an honor to have the students and staff of New Field Elementary as neighbors. Keep up the great work!
Your friend,
Brad Harbaugh

NEWS - May 1, 2008: Roosevelt High School's Musical Theatre program was awarded $100,000 in honor of AARP founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus.
The Musical Theatre Program is comprised of Roosevelt students of all ages as well as students from William H. Taft High School, Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center, and Mary Gage Peterson Elementary School, under the direction of Cliff Gabor. This program brings together students of widely varying experiences, circumstances and cultures to enrich the lives of the students and the community. Prior to 2003, Roosevelt had gone nearly 40 years without a theatre program.
"Our theatre program is one of a kind," said Cliff Gabor, Roosevelt High School's Musical Theatre Director. "These kids put in so much time and effort into making the program successful and we are honored to receive this award from AARP."

While gardening last year, I found what I think is a girls 1954 high school ring. The blue stone and eagle on the front make me think it is a Taft HS ring. Initials GPE. Any thoughts

With the help and support of Chris Jones, Mather's new principal and past Mather graduate (1986), a handful of Mather Alumni are planning a 50th birthday celebration to coinside with the construction and updating of the building. The target date is early fall, 2009.
We are looking for corporate sponsors, and, as the date gets closer, volunteers.
We'll need names of alums from all 50 years past. This has been done at Boone and Clinton and were wonderful successes.
So tell everyone you know who might be interested.
We hope to make this one as memorable and contribute to the school as well.
There are currently 2 Mather scholarship groups that work very hard to award scholarships to deserving graduates:
One is the Zeolite Scholarship Fund (website under construction) For information contact Jan Kozin Gordon (Barry950
aol.com)
The other is the Mather Alumni Scholarship Fund (website up and running)
For more information, go to Mather's Website or one of the above. Thanks!
Can you believe it's been 20 years?
Our 1988 graduating class will be having a reunion at the Green Olive Restaurant in Hegewisch on Friday, August 1, 2008. There will be a DJ, food menu available, and drink specials. The time for this event will be 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
