Dear Alumni,
As the Centennial Planning Committee began to make plans for this Spring's
festivities at Schurz we felt strongly that the establishment of a formal
Alumni Association was long overdue. Therefore, it is with great pride
that we officially announce the birth of the Carl Schurz High School
Alumni Association. We will work to be sure that the next century of
Schurz students will be supported by interested Alumni, eagerly supporting
their efforts to continue the proud tradition that we have all helped
build. The Alumni Association will exist as a self-sufficient
organization without financial support from Carl Schurz High School.
The Carl Schurz Alumni Association has been formed to pursue the following
goals, as stated in the Articles of Incorporation. It is our intention:
To preserve and maintain the history of Carl Schurz High School in
Chicago, Illinois
To foster relationships among Alumni
To provide scholarships to worthy students
To maintain and enhance the learning environment for the students of Carl
Schurz High School
With these goals in mind, the Alumni Association has two major projects on
the horizon. The first is the upcoming "Centennial Celebration"
event to be held on Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2, 2010. This event
will serve as an opportunity for all Alumni to gather and celebrate the
100 year birthday of this proud and majestic building; and will benefit
the current and future students of our beloved alma mater. With the
proceeds of the Centennial, we hope to accomplish the following:
Begin restoration of the legendary M.P. Moller (1936) pipe organ in our
auditorium, with a demonstration performance at the Centennial Celebration
Upgrade the video capabilities in our auditorium with a state-of-the-art
projector and screen
Open an Alumni Association Scholarship fund to benefit deserving Schurz
graduates
Purchase and support a display cabinet to be placed in the Library, to
spotlight Alumni accomplishments and events
Provide start-up money for Alumni newsletter production and mailing
expenses
The second major project is to begin the planning of Multi-Year Reunions
to begin in Spring, 2011. These are in no way meant to take the place of
or to supersede any class' plans to celebrate as an individual entity.
These are intended to facilitate community between all Alumni who attended
school during the same years. For instance, a graduate of 1985 attended
Schurz with students of the classes of 1982 through 1988, this hopefully
will give us a chance to celebrate with more of the people we knew at
Schurz. The plans for these celebrations are still in their early stages,
but the chart below represents our thoughts on how the plan may shape up.
Class Years Reunion Date
1900-1969 May 2011
1970-1979 May 2012
1980-1989 May 2013
1990-1999 May 2014
2000-2009 May 2015
1900-1974 May 2016
1975-1984 May 2017
1985-1994 May 2018
1995-2004 May 2019
2005-2014 May 2020
The Centennial Committee is working diligently to provide an exciting and
fun weekend for all. PLEASE, (he begs) if you know any Schurzites who may
not know about the Centennial plans, please ask them to sign up on the
Alumni Directory at SchurzHS.org so that they can be part of the big
party. It's not something they will want to miss! Registration for the
Centennial Celebration weekend festivities and the Alumni Association
Membership Drive will commence December 1st. Details to follow.
Go Bulldogs!
Sincerely,
Tim Anderson

Dear Alumni,
Many things are happening at your alma mater!
Nicholas Senn High School’s Local School Council (LSC) initiated a process to develop a 5-year strategic plan designed to recognize, build on, and celebrate Senn’s strengths inside the school and throughout the community. Facilitated by the Executive Service Corp, a strategic planning committee made up of Senn parents, students, staff, community organizations, religious leaders and elected officials was formed to lead the process.
To date, the Senn Strategic Planning Committee (SSPC) has sparked or supported several new initiatives:
1. AVID (Achievement Via Individual Determination) program expansion to include freshmen, sophomores and juniors. An excellent collaboration between Senn and DePaul University has resulted in a $399,000 grant from AT&T to continue development and expansion of this program.
2. A Green curriculum task force, a collaboration between sspc, the faculty, a new student club –the green team- and State Senator Heather Steans has established two pilot projects:
a. students give up 2 lunch periods weekly to collect recyclables and keep them out of the waste stream.
b. a new community garden to be planted on the school campus. All the pots for the seeds, the student make from recycled paper they have collected.
3. Reestablishment of the Senn student council. Dormant for several years, the student council, now meeting Friday mornings, has re-emerged and is playing a vital part in school operations.
A secret to the ultimate success of Senn is parent involvement. Our newest initiative will begin a parent group in the fall of 2009 for incoming freshmen parents.
You can help! We need a $2000 grant for the startup costs of the first year. This will include quarterly meetings with dinner and childcare, mailings, setting up an email list. The start up cost will build a group with the 2009-2010 freshman class, with the expectation of growing a self-sustaining group with every new freshman class thereafter.
Enclosed is the budget for this effort. We thank you for the opportunity to make this request and for your consideration. Please feel free to contact us with your input and suggestions

Congratulations to Alumni Cameron Tolliver and current Al Raby students Melvin Carter, Antwon Rogers, and Megan Caradine for completing last Sunday’s Rock and Roll Half-Marathon! They have trained hard all summer and their dedication paid off on Sunday.. Raby is very proud of them for completing the race.
The 2008 Alumni Professional Day was reduced in scope from prior years; and I was denied the pleasure of speaking to the students as I have done 15 previous times.
With the start of the new school year approaching, it is hoped that this program be expanded to accommodate all anticipated alumni.
Besides family and teacher influences in these tough times, our children need the mentors and role models that Lane Tech can provide through its extensive alumni base.
My involvement for 2009 is especially important as my 50th reunion will be taking place on October 3rd, and I've been the only 1959 graduate that has participated on Alumni Day.
Upholding the honor of Lane,
Fred J. Wittenberg

I remember the annual Christmas programs the the 7th and 8th grade students presented for the other students in the school and for the neighborhodd residents. Mrs Copeland taught us all the music and Mrs Raddits helped with the stageing. We looked forward to it every year wehter we watched or participated.
Several weeks before summer vacation started, we had "field day". All the grades participated in running races, high and broad jumps and other field sports.prizes were awarded to the winners of the events, and the PTA furnished the refreshments.
I remember the big playground area where we spent recess.
If anyone from the class of 1951 is reading this I would like to hear from you.

Technology helps deaf adviser expand practice
2009-06-29 15:49:00-04
Videoconferencing allows Louis Schwarz's Washington-area advisory firm to serve deaf clients face to face
By Lisa Shidler
June 28, 2009, 6:01 AM EST
Louis Schwarz responds to his clients' concerns even though he can't hear what they are saying. Mr. Schwarz, who is deaf, has been a financial adviser for 26 years and works with many deaf and hard-of-hearing clients at Schwarz Financial Services LLC in Bethesda, Md., where he is senior managing partner.
Many clients are college professors or retired professors at nearby universities, including Gallaudet University in Washington, America's largest educational institution for the deaf.
But now, as a result of low-cost videoconferencing over the Internet, Mr. Schwarz's firm is finding that most of its new clients are coming from outside the Washington metropolitan area. Many prospects are attracted to the firm because of his involvement in several national deaf organizations and his contributions to publications for the deaf.
"It's part of deaf culture to prefer face-to-face communication," said Mr. Schwarz, noting that his firm uses audio and video devices designed for the deaf, as well as Skype from San Jose, Calif.-based eBay Inc., for clients overseas.
"In the old days, we used to type or e-mail. It's more comfortable for us to see each other, and it's more efficient," Mr. Schwarz said.
The firm's 10 videophones allow him and his advisers to communicate with clients via sign language. Be-cause the firm has a $100,00 minimum for new clients and most clients have at least $250,000 in assets, Mr. Schwarz said, most clients have access to this technology. But Mr. Schwarz, whose fee-based-planning-oriented firm manages $20 million, also has a number of clients who aren't deaf.
"People don't recognize us as a deaf company or approach me because of my deafness; they come and work with us because of our professionalism," he said.
"They trust us," Mr. Schwarz said.
Mr. Schwarz, who is a certified financial planner, has a seven-member staff, including four advisers, all of whom are deaf.
The firm's potential target market is large.
According to the Bethesda-based National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, 36 million adult Americans - or about 17% of the adult population - report some degree of hearing loss.
The group said that two to three out of every 1,000 children in the United States are born deaf or with hearing loss and that about 4,000 new cases of sudden deafness occur each year.
To help the deaf with financial issues, the National Association of the Deaf in Silver Spring, Md., provides financial education at its conferences, said Rosaline Crawford, director of the law and advocacy center for the group.
"We know of a number of deaf and hard-of-hearing financial advisers, some of whom communicate with people in American Sign Language," she wrote in an e-mail.
Mr. Schwarz said that his firm's deaf clients appreciate working with a deaf adviser.
"A large percentage of deaf individuals tend to feel most comfortable working with other deaf individuals," he said. "We have the same language and come from the same place."
For clients who don't have a hearing problem, Mr. Schwarz and partner Joshua R. Beal communicate by using a voice relay service. The client can ask a question and an interpreter will use sign language to repeat the question.
Mr. Schwarz or Mr. Beal will sign their answers back.
The interpreter relays the information to the client.
Mr. Schwarz and Mr. Beal used that technology during an interview for this article, but both also spoke during parts of the interview.
"Some people prefer to hear a voice, and some are more comfortable with an interpreter," said Mr. Beal, who spoke during most of the interview.
Nearly half of Mr. Schwarz's clients are retired, while Mr. Beal tends to take on younger clients.
Like everyone else, the firm's clients were hurt and alarmed by the market downturn, though most have now calmed down, the advisers said.
"Because the market was so crazy, I was in cash and didn't start buying until January or February," Mr. Beal said. "What I've learned from this market is that you've got to be patient."

Visit the home page for Volume Libraries and Kanoon Library Project
2009 marks the inaugural year for Volume, and we invited 17 CPS elementary schools to apply for the program. We evaluated schools based upon need, principal support, and the vision of library staff. From the 17 applicants, Gensler selected Kanoon Magnet Elementary as the winning school. Gensler’s hope is that in this initial year, we will learn how to run the project so that it can be expanded to encompass multiple schools and multiple design firms. We hope to create a sustainable program that will thrive in years to come.

Brandon McNamara studied tough topics like nuclear war and alternative energy when he was not in the classroom. Brandon was a member of the Harlan Community Academy's debate team, which meant he often stayed up late doing research on issues like biofuels and global warning. Brandon and his teammates set up mock debates on weekends so they could practice for tournaments. Because of his dedication and debates skills, Brandon won a full ride to Northwestern University. Brandon said, "I was never a goodspeaker when I was younger, that's how most people are". Brandon who joined the debate team his sophomore year and stayed because of the "real world" experience he gained on the team. "It makes you to learn more" he said. Robert Pincham (69) Harlan's debate coach, says all of his debaters have received college acceptance letters from schools as the University of Illinois, Howard University and Vanderbilt University.

Summer Quest www.exploresummerquest.org
Below is a message from Alyssa, a current student at WPCP. Last summer, Alyssa participated in a CPS program called Summer Quest, which connects low-income high school students with high-quality pre-college programs all over the nation. Exposure to college campuses, lecture halls, dorms and intellectual environments has an enormous impact on students—last year, over 90% of graduating Summer Quest participants enrolled in college. Through their experiences at summer programs, CPS students are empowered to envision themselves in college. Unfortunately, these experiences are unattainable for many CPS students. The average cost for a four-week summer program is upwards of $5,000, an unfeasible financial burden for most families. Thus, Summer Quest provides scholarship assistance to offset the costs of summer programs so that CPS students can reap the benefits of these intellectually and personally challenging programs.

Carol Martin (Janicki) January class of 1960
Sheri Klein, Ph.D., a professor of art education in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, was presented with the Women’s Caucus Kathy Connors Teaching Award at the 2009 National Art Education Association Conference in Minneapolis Sunday, April 19.
The Kathy Connors Teaching Award honors an outstanding art educator who is recognized by students and colleagues as someone who consistently inspires and mentors students in a cooperative, collegial, collaborative and nurturing manner.
Klein came to teach art education at UW-Stout in 1993 and has served the university as a faculty member, program director in art education and director of a children’s art program. Over the years, she has taught art, art education and graduate level courses in education. She has mentored undergraduate art education students in many capacities including her role as adviser for many years to the UW-Stout National Art Education Student Chapter.
As a successful recipient of multi-year UW-System PK-16 grants to work collaboratively with Wisconsin art teachers in two districts to develop electronic portfolios, she worked with teachers and consultants to integrate technology into K-12 art teaching practices. She also has worked collaboratively with many faculty members both at UW-Stout and at other institutions on research projects and grants.
In a letter of nomination, Read Diket wrote, “Her dedication to the field has impacted peers, students, and administrators at the university level and in our nation’s schools… Her willingness to reach out to others, to endeavor as mentor and friend to teachers in schools, university peers, and to serve in Women’s Caucus, has extended her influence beyond my knowledge.”
A peer wrote, “Her research agenda consistently pushes on enhancing teaching and learning.”

Sullivan High School January 1959 Classmates:
As you know, a reunion committee has been organized to plan a 50th Reunion of the Sullivan High School Class of January 1959. We have attempted to contact each one of our classmates by e-mail or letter to determine the viability of such a project. The results of the e-mail are that many of you responded that you would attend either alone, or with a spouse or significant other. Eleven responded that they would not attend. Four responded that they were not certain. Forty-five classmates have not responded as of this time. We certainly urge each of you who have received our e-mail or letter to respond. We want to extend our condolences to the families and friends of 15 of our classmates who have passed away.
With the confirmation of such a successful reunion response, we have committed to a time, date and place.
The reunion event will be:
October 17th, 2009 (Saturday evening)
Mission Hills Country Club
1677 W. Mission Hills Rd
Northbrook, IL. 60062
Cocktails will start at 6 PM and dinner will be served at 7 PM. We will be planning music, dancing, a special amount of nostalgia, and as a special surprise, we're expecting to have some of the 10 surviving teachers that graced our
presence 50 years ago.
Your committee has worked diligently trying to keep the cost factor to a minimum, even for a 50th reunion that only happens once in a lifetime. We will be serving a complete meal including appetizers, main course, dessert, and a cash
bar. Our expenses will include festive table decors, mailings, reunion book, as well as an intended gift to Sullivan High School.
The cost of the event will be $100 per person. To reserve your presence at this gala event, please forward your payment as soon as possible. This will allow us to facilitate the production of the reunion without additional expenditures on behalf of your committee. In the event that there is a need for you to cancel, we will, of course, refund your deposit.
Please mail your check made payable to:
