Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875): author. Andersen was born in a small town in Denmark to poor parents. He moved to Copenhagen when he was 14 to become an actor and dancer in theater; however, he found poetry and schooling and soon became a playwright and a folktale storyteller. He wrote "The Ugly Duckling," "The Little Mermaid," "The Emperor's New Clothes" and other stories. |
Hans Christian Andersen High School was erected at the intersection of Lincoln & Division Streets. In 1893 an addition that would eventually become the Andersen Educational and Vocational Guidance Center, now known as the Andersen Upper Grade Center, was constructed. Today, Andersen Elementary, along with the U.G.C., still stands at the site of its original construction, though its address is now 1148 N Honore Street. |
