Washington, George (1732-1799) George Washington was born to a wealthy planter family in Virginia. At age seventeen he became a surveyor. Often called the "Father of Our Country," Washington served as a delegate to the first Continental Congress, the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, and the first President of the United States of America.
