Biography Information

Du Sable, Jean Baptiste Point (1730s-1818) Du Sable, a Haitian fur trader of African descent, was the first permanent non-native settler of Chicago. After arriving in 1779, he established a trading post on the north side of the Chicago River. He married a Native-American woman with whom he had two children. In 1799 he sold his property to a fellow trader, J. LaLime, who then sold it to John Kinzie in 1801.
